Sify offers revenue opportunities for cyber cafes
In order to arrest the closure of its franchisee-owned cyber cafes owing to increased costs, city-based internet services company Sify Technologies Saturday launched 'Sify mylife' that enables a cyber cafe owner to increase his revenue.
The cyber cafes can also earn by being a test centre for corporates holding online recruitment tests; providing wall space for advertisers by being part of Sify Ad Campaign programme.
"With increasing real estate and labour costs internet cafes cannot survive being just a browsing centre. There is a whole lot of revenue opportunities from online services," added Natesh Mani, president (Consumer Infrastructure Business Access Media).
He said there are around 160,000 cyber cafes in India and 37 percent of India's internet access happens from there.
For a cyber cafe to be part of 'Sify mylife' programme, it can either get a broadband connection from Sify Technologies or buy a modem like equipment costing Rs.9,999 from it.
"We source the equipment from China. It has one year warranty and Sify Technologies takes care of after sales service," Mani told IANS.
According to him, Sify Technologies' 1,200 cyber cafes and its retail broadband customers will automatically be part of 'Sify mylife'.
"The discounts and commissions on services availed are available only for the cyber cafes and not for retail customers.
"We may roll out reward points for our retail broadband subscribers at a latter date," Mani added.
Sify Technologies has around 100,000 retail broadband subscribers and the average revenue per user (ARPU) is around Rs.500.

Now, cars will inform about accidents on its own
Computer scientists in the US are developing technology that will transform cars into intelligent vehicles fitted with aircraft-style black boxes that can record information about driving behaviour during accidents.
The device forms part of an intelligent car envisaged by researchers at Intel. They are developing technology that will transform cars into smart vehicles that are able to detect dangers on the road and even take over control from motorists.
They have been in discussions with car manufacturers about developing cars that are permanently connected to the Internet and other vehicles using wireless technology. Camera systems that can recognise street signs and then take over control of a car if the motorist tries to drive the wrong way up a one-way street, for example, are being developed for use in vehicles.
On board sensors will also be able to detect pot holes in the road and report their location to road maintenance authorities as the car is moving. The cars will also be able to track the location of surrounding vehicles and alert drivers if they get too close or try to change lanes when another vehicle is in their blind spot.
The technology was revealed at a research showcase by Intel in Santa Clara, California, last week. The company has been in discussions with car manufacturers about putting the technology into new vehicles.
Justin Ratner, the director of Intel Laboratories and chief technology officer, said: "We are looking at a whole range of enhancements that will improve the driving experience, safety and security of vehicles."The intelligent vehicle is what we are talking about here. Once a car is connected, more or less on a continuous basis, all sorts of interesting possibilities present themselves.
"With vision systems on cars, it is perfectly reasonable for a car on its own to see the sign that says 'wrong way' or 'do not enter' and bring the vehicle to a halt at the side of the road so we don't have these senseless accidents where someone has failed to recognise a sign.
"We have talked to highway maintenance departments about using sensors that are already in cars to report the GPS coordinates for pot holes in the road to the maintenance department."Insurance companies are expected to welcome on-board car systems that will reduce the risk of accidents.
A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers said that aviation style black box technology for recording the circumstances around accidents could also help speed up payouts by reducing delays in determining causes of accidents.

Yahoo app for Android – Quick Review
Hits
+ The applications have a slick and attractive User Interface.
+ The interface is fast and responsive on our device.
+ New feature: Smart Folders and Flag a message are very useful.
+ Yahoo Mail app integrates with phone contacts
+ The mail composer has a rich interface and supports attachments (multiple format support)
+ In Milestone, the indicator LED glows lavender, to match the App UI, when there is a notification. Misses
- No support for multiple accounts.
- No integration with other chat clients like gtalk or msn.
- No thumbnail for image attachments, in the mail view.
- No indication in the mail preview, for type of attachment
- Notifications are not spontaneous. The notification does not stay in the bar for a long time.
- Yahoo Mail for android is ad supported
- Yahoo Messenger log out every time you close the application without warning. It does run in the background seamlessly like the google talk.
It’s been a while since the supremacy in Mail and Chat has been taken over by Gmail. Yahoo is trying its best to grab that spot. They want to prove a point and tell the world that they still have what it needs to be a market leader. With the new Android apps, Yahoo hits certain sweet spots and misses a few by miles. But it’s a very good step that’s been put forward. The apps are already available for iPhone, but the iPhones versions have also been updated to support HTML5. Go ahead, try it out and tell us what you feel.
